the guide to
eteryuri

series, fictional hyperfixations, all of it advertised to ur... DISGUSTINGLY UNCULTURED... i mean very kind... selves

lemme start with an anime series list and WHY I never forgot them (:

Revolutionary Girl Utena / Adolescence of UtenaThis anime series/movie is very abstract, to say the least. Yes, it's yuri, but it's also about coming of age, gender roles, patriarchy, etc. Please don't forget to pay attention to any content warnings associated with the series because it focuses on multiple sensitive topics.
To summarize the plot, imagine 2023's Barbie movie but the main Barbie challenges gender stereotypes, gets sucked into fitting herself into a box by toxic men, and doesn't believe she can fall in love with another girl but OOOOPS SHE DOESSSSS. Also banger music and THE VISUALS. And cow Nanami.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica / Magireco / moviesWant to see magical girls suffer for being selfish? This is the franchise for YOU! From wanting to live to wanting unrequited love to be... not unrequited LOL. It's also... YOU GUESSED IT... A YURI. Learn to understand love in many forms, from admiration to friendship to something much... stronger. Explaining the plots of the entire franchise would be awful for me. The main series is about a girl who doesn't know what she truly wants, she's as ordinary as they come, but she holds a great power and an even more powerful history...

Trigun / Trigun Stampede + Trigun/Maximum mangaAs with most franchises made in the 90's and before, there were many restraints on what a writer could include in their animations. In 1998's Trigun, some of the plot advancement was sacrificed to make Vash... seem straight. This sounds like copium but it is very true, any homo undertones were covered up by Vash being hyper-romantic and Wolfwood having an odd sexual encounter. However, 2023's Trigun Stampede embraced the homo vibes and more, building upon Yasuhiro Nightow's manga to make his world more futuristic. I recommend the old anime as a comedic relief, but if you want plot and... symbolic homoromanticism... read the manga and watch Trigun Stampede.
Cain and Abel but humanoid weapons/energy plants. Literally. Vash believes in humanity, Knives wants to destroy it. After fleeting Earth to find refuge elsewhere, a crew of spaceship adventurers find themselves crash-landed on a strange planet with no vegetation and depend on their experimental lifeforms for life sustainability.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Rebuilds, mangaI know it's odd when so many shows focus on children experiencing puberty but bear with me here. NGE focuses on more than coming of age, sexuality, and DADDY ISSUES. Similar to Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena, Rei is a chick in a shell. She does not understand humans, their feelings, and their determination, simply because she is not entirely a human. Angels from space threaten humanity... but why is that? All these children know is they're meant to pilot the Evangelion (but what is this machine?) and fight these angels to protect the ones they care about. This story is a massive ride of symbolism and allegories (this entire list is). It's a HUGE ride, and it can be hard to stay focused, but it's very worth the time.

No. 6 anime/mangaIt's yaoi. At your face too. Yes, I love queer media, and you should embrace it too. This story is about a boy and his childhood friend (love interest), and a deadly insect threatening life in a seemingly utopian society. There is a lot of... YOU GUESSED IT... symbolism and allegories!!!!!!! And many wonderful themes about toxic governments, poverty, and more! I apologize, it's been years since I read No.6, but trust me bro, I never forgot about it.

Land of the Lustrous anime/mangaI am killing you with symbolism and allegories. To understand Land of the Lustrous takes some basic understanding of Buddhism and why Ichikawa Haruko chooses the imagery she uses. However, you can still understand it through the experiences of Phosphophyllite, the main character who undergoes many transformations while others around them perish at the hands of Lunarians, a race of moon people who want to turn the gems into jewelry... but is this really the reason? LOTL is essentially queer. Ichikawa explores romanticism in genderless crystal humanoids, and how these beautiful rocks also... lack human emotions as well. They are beautiful but faulty and derivatives of an extinct human population that perished so many years ago.

Mob Psycho 100This is a very drastic change of pace as this series is goofy, but it's also about human compassion in many ways. Shigeo Kageyama (Mob) is an esper gifted with unmatched psychic abilities that Arataka Reigen, a self-proclaimed psychic consultant, wishes to exploit. However, Mob does not care about what Reigen wishes to achieve by using him, he just wants to feel like a normal boy. This is hard for him, and he knows controlling violent spirits is a very necessary job for him.
I love Arataka Reigen I love him he's sooooo amazing for no reason he literally is the rizz master
